THE BEST ALLERGY-FRIENDLY ADVENT CALENDARS

Here at The Allergy Team we have bought some lovely non-food advent calendars over the years, from Sarah’s traditional tree with cute felt pockets, to Jen’s snowy village scene atop little wooden drawers – but come the 1st December, the lure of the chocolate advent calendar is strong!

So, in a bid to make it easier for you to find an advent calendar that your family can enjoy, we have scoured all the main supermarkets for the top allergy-friendly versions.

We visited: Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Iceland, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose and it was great to see so many options on the shelves.

These allergy-friendly advent calendars are grouped into five sections, and you can click on the thumbnails for a closer look. There are details of where to buy the products at the bottom of the page, along with more information about them.

It is really important that you double-check ingredients’ labels yourself before buying.

We really hope you find something for your family – an early Christmas present from The Allergy Team!

Where to buy allergy-friendly advent calendars

Please note: Stock seems to change depending on the size of store and this is just a snapshot of what we found, rather than a comprehensive list.

Moo Free – we found these in larger M&S stores and some Asda stores. We have been told the Moo Free factory is currently free of nut ingredients, which means their advent calendars do not state the usual ‘made in a factory that handles hazelnuts’ warning.

Nomo – we found this calendar in Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose

The Free From Kitchen Co. – Tesco stock this advent calendar which is milk-free, egg-free, nut-free and gluten-free but contains soya lecithin.

Swizzels – this brand’s milk-free, egg-free and nut-free advent calendar does contain soya. We found it in Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s Free From – these calendars are milk-free, egg-free and gluten-free but are made from sunflower lecithin. The ingredients label says that it is not suitable for those with an allergy to soya. It has a “may contain” warning for nuts.

Morrison’s Free From – these calendars are milk-free, egg-free and gluten-free but are made with soya lecithin and “may contain” nuts.

Kinnerton – characters including Barbie, Hey Duggee, My Little Pony, Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig all make an appearance in this range. We found them in Aldi, Asda, Iceland, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s.

Kinder – the Kinder Chocolate Mini Advent Calendar and the Kinder Country Mini Fine Milk Chocolate with Cereals are nut-free but The Kinder Bueno advent calendar contains nuts – please double check the ingredients label. We found these in Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Other supermarkets – having searched online and in store, we couldn’t find a free from calendar in Tesco this year (let us know if you find one!).

Asda’s free from version had sold out everywhere we looked, so we don’t have a photo.

During our search, we visited Lidl and the Co-op several times, but they didn’t have advent calendars in stock. We will keep checking!

If none of the above is suitable for your child, then there are some great non-food options available. For example, in Tesco we found a lovely Disney storybook collection advent calendar, as well as a Peppa Pig advent book collection.  There are also calendars by major toy companies like Lego and Playmobil… or of course, if you have the time, you could try making your own.

Best value allergy-friendly advent calendars

In terms of price, the best value advent calendar we could find was the Kinnerton nut-safe advent calendar selling for £1 in Iceland and Asda. Other stores are selling it for £2 or £2.50. Nomo is £4 and The Free From Kitchen is £2 in Tesco.
