EURneffy, known as Neffy, is a device which delivers adrenaline in a nasal spray, to treat someone experiencing anaphylaxis. Neffy is an alternative to adrenaline pens which has been approved for use in the UK and is now being prescribed by doctors privately and on the NHS.

WHAT IS NEFFY?

Neffy is a small, plastic device which delivers adrenaline as a nasal spray. There is no needle involved.

Each device carries one dose of adrenaline, so people prescribed with Neffy should always carry two devices.

Clinicians can prescribe Neffy to people who weigh more than 30 kgs. A lower dose has already been approved for use in the US and is under review for use in the UK.

CAN SCHOOLS BUY NEFFY DEVICES?

Currently, schools can buy adrenaline pens (EpiPen and Jext) to hold as “spare pens ” in school, but they cannot buy Neffy devices to keep in school.

HOW DO YOU USE NEFFY?

Each of the plastic devices contains a single dose nasal spray which you deliver into one nostril. As with adrenaline pens, a second dose may be needed (sprayed into the same nostril).

You can order a trainer device here. It’s worth noting that the trainer devices are single use, so you can only practice with them once! Neffy demo devices have a different mechanism to allow for multiple demonstrations.

ARE NEFFY DEVICES AND ADRENALINE PENS INTERCHANGEABLE?

Neffy and adrenaline pens contain the same drug (Epinephrine) for treating anaphylaxis. Instructions for use can be found on the Neffy website

However, there are lots of reasons why clinicians and patients might choose one device over the other and you should always use someone’s prescribed medication if it’s available. In an emergency you can use an adrenaline pen to treat someone who has been prescribed Neffy.
