MANAGING FOOD ALLERGIES IN SCHOOL

A course for school staff to keep pupils with food allergies safe

Whatever your role in a school, pupils with food allergies and their parents or carers are relying on you to keep them safe.

It’s a huge responsibility but by really understanding food allergy, knowing the risks and having confidence in managing medication, you can improve pupil wellbeing and build confidence throughout the whole school community.

WHY DOES MY SCHOOL NEED THIS COURSE?

20% of severe allergic reactions happen at school. These incidents are devastating for the child who suffers, frightening for their peers and distressing for staff.

The Allergy Team’s course will talk you through everything you need to know, step-by-step, including:

  • How having a food allergy affects the day-to-day life of pupils.
  • The medication students might be carrying and how to use it.
  • How to spot the signs of an allergic reaction and how to respond.
  • Developing an allergy management plan for a whole-school approach.
  • Supporting the wellbeing of pupils with food allergies through inclusion and a positive attitude to managing their condition.

BUT WE ALREADY HAVE ALLERGY TRAINING…

The Allergy Team’s course for schools is completely different.

We will not just remind you what you need to do but show you why it matters.

You will hear from students with food allergies themselves about what it’s like to navigate challenges, big and small, every day.

We will talk through some of the less obvious risks, such as junk modelling with food packaging or bringing Easter chicks into the classroom.

There are bespoke modules for Primary and Secondary settings and you can refresh your memory whenever you need: ahead of a school outing, sports fixture or cooking lesson, for example.

WHO WILL WE HEAR FROM AND HOW IS IT PRESENTED?

The course is delivered online, in bite-sized modules. It is video-based, packed with personal testimony and produced by former TV executives.

Staff can work through modules at their own pace, hearing from pupils, parents, medics, a clinical psychologist, school staff and caterers.

Key information will be summarised in downloadable checklists and staff can watch the videos as many times as they want.

Our course is based on rigorous research and has been signed off by experienced allergy doctors.

A FLAT FEE FOR THE WHOLE SCHOOL

For an annual subscription, you can share the course with as many staff as you like. We will make sure the content is always up to date. The modules will be available to access over and over again, making it easy for participants to double-check best practices or refresh their knowledge.
