Schools Allergy Register Case Study: Walbottle Village Primary
Walbottle Village Primary near Newcastle was the first school in the UK to be awarded the Schools Allergy Register trust mark.
We wanted to be able to show parents that at our school we take allergies incredibly seriously and that you can trust us to manage the most vulnerable of circumstances by giving every single team member the most robust training and action plans.
“From start to finish the team were amazing!”
This is the kind of feedback we love. Business Manager, Danielle Thackray wanted to strengthen and improve the school’s procedures but says working with The Allergy Team had the added benefit of helping her manage wider emergency response planning.
Why Walbottle recommends us:
Danielle would recommend joining the Schools Allergy Register to other schools because:
- The whole process was STRAIGHTFORWARD
- The advice and information from The Allergy Team was EXCELLENT
- She felt supported with HELP EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
I spoke to one mother whose child has a milk allergy and has joined our school, and she told me that she was bowled over by the health plan that we gave her and that she has never experienced such care and attention with her children’s allergies before. Plus, carrying out this assessment helped me manage other emergency response planning!
How we worked with Walbottle Village Primary
Joining the Schools Allergy Register is a process and we support you from the moment you sign up. We worked with Walbottle for three months, but every school is different.
SIGNING UP
Walbottle signed up and paid online. They immediately received our Welcome Pack which includes a guide to joining the Register, a questionnaire, information about our allergy and anaphylaxis training (included for all staff when you join the Register) and template documents.
GETTING STARTED
Sarah, one of the Founders of The Allergy Team, was assigned to work with Walbottle. She went through their completed questionnaire to understand what the school already had in place in terms of managing allergies and to identify where she could best offer support.
MENTORING
We worked with Walbottle to ensure they were meeting the best practice laid out in the Schools Allergy Code. This involved online mentoring calls and support to create their Allergy and Anaphylaxis Policy and to purchase and position their spare adrenaline pens.
STAFF TRAINING
While senior leaders updated school-wide procedures, Walbottle's staff completed our allergy and anaphylaxis online training. We've partnered with Allergy UK to deliver the 'gold standard' in allergy training which is CPD-accredited and video based. Schools joining the Register can enrol all their staff, including new joiners, and there's a Refresher course for year two.
RECEIVING THE TRUST MARK
Once we were satisfied Walbottle was meeting the criteria laid out in the Schools Allergy Code, they joined the Schools Allergy Register and received our trust mark.
ONGOING SUPPORT
Walbottle's staff have continuing access to all our resources and training. This includes staff drop-in sessions and our expert Q&A series.
Walbottle's verdict:
"I would highly recommend working with The Allergy Team, they offered support & help every step of the way. From start to finish the team were amazing!"
